Jiminy Cricket in our Garden
Do you remember Jiminy Cricket from the Disney classic, Pinnochio? Clever, perky, and with a heart of gold, he's always been a favourite character of mine.
There must be thousands of these little critters in the wild grass behind my mom's house. Every time Willow and I go for a walk back there it's like we're walking through fields of popcorn.
This fellow found a good spot on one of the flowers and was nibbling on a leaf when I decided to stick my camera in his face. A good natured sort, he stuck around long enough to let me take his picture, so we could all admire his beauty.

Umm, no disrespect intended, and the pics are GREAT, but that is a grasshopper. There are hundreds of different types of them (over 400, actually, in my prairie state, and some are HUGE, some are green, some are itty bitty. A very important part of the food chain (and in some parts of the world, a very important HUMAN food - cheap protein). Thanks for sharing! Deb
Oh Carolyn, I have to admit that this post has cracked me up!!! Your pictures are absolutely lovely, and I too, am an admirer of Jiminy Cricket...but like your previous commentor has mentioned; your lovely pictures are of a grasshopper. Funny girl, you've made me smile this morning. :) And yes, grasshoppers are Biblically speaking, a "clean" food, and reportedly taste much like popcorn when sauteed in butter. I wouldn't know...
Oh cricket, or grasshopper, they are pretty cute. I remember staying at my Grandmothers farm, and they were enormous! We [naughty us] would tie strings on their back legs and keep them for pets.
If they are grasshoppers, then what makes the Cicada like noise in the trees during the heat?

Deb: Sometimes I allow myself creative license and his face looks sooo much like Jiminy, I couldn't resist dubbing him a cricket. Thanks for the clarification.
C-ingspots: I had no idea my popcorn reference had any basis in fact. That's interesting, although I'll have to take your word for it.
Jen: These guys are the source of that LOUD noise...I watched one the other day to satisfy my own curiosity. I would never have thought to tie a string to one of these guys.
The cricket controversy went right over my head. Yeah, he looks like Jiminy, who by the way, taught me to spell encyclopedia. (I still have to replay the song in my head in order to spell it.)
Karin: I confess, I don't know that song. I'll have to see if I can find it somewhere.
Yes I do remember that character, that seems like such a long time ago. These are incredible pictures.
Gillian: It does seem to require a stretch of memory, doesn't it? *smile* Thank you!
Oh, I love that image...fields of popcorn. I can tell you my favourite grasshopper story. I was in an Arizona ghost town when the caretaker offered me a bag of dried grasshoppers to munch on. I asked what they tasted like. 'They taste like whatever they've been eating,' he said. 'A bunch of them ate my basil.' I reached into the bag thinking I could stomach a dried and salted basil grasshopper. 'But sometimes,' he continued, 'they eat shit.' So much for sampling grasshoppers. No disrespect for Jiminy.
HE'S CAAAUTE! and he looks exactly like the cartoon Jiminy too! Well, kind of. LOL
Deborah: You made me laugh out loud. I guess, I won't be tasting
grasshoppers any time soon, either.
Diane: It's all in the eyes. *grin*
